The marketing team is excited to announce that we have once again brought in interns this summer! This year we have a small team of three and are trying out a new program focusing on short, targeted sessions of ideation. All three have jumped in on active accounts and are enjoying solving real-world challenges alongside our project teams. They’re only a few weeks in, but they have already presented to the leadership team in our personal care, pets, and entertainment categories!

We asked each of them to share something about themselves:

Andrew, University of Tennessee
Business Management/Entrepreneurship Collateral:

He’s a drum major and has marched in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade! He’s also a twin, which makes us wonder whether it’s actually him in the office.

Jessica, University of Minnesota
Bachelor of Science ICP Product Design, Sustainability, & Applied Business:

She surprised us with her extracurricular diversity – she rides a motorcycle, has hiked 57 of her 100 mile summer goal, bicycles, gardens, and has a pet cow!

Kara Rose, University of Tennessee
Retail Consumer Science/Business Administration Minor:

Her favorite movie isn’t your normal choice – “We Bought A Zoo!” We think it’s a great story too, but have changed our plans to give her a rotation in our finance department…

Welcome, All!

AAI Engineer Wins Regional SolidWorks Challenge

As a part of the annual SolidWorks rollout of the latest edition of their CAD modeling software, the AAI Knoxville engineering team attended the local release session hosted by 3D firm ModernTech and participated in a head-to-head Model Mania contest. The contest involved modeling a 3D component based on a 2D drawing as quickly as possible. Not only did one of our mechanical engineers, Steven Johnson, take first place for the Knoxville event, he also took third place for the entire southeast region. This included more than 10 states and 300 competitors!

“I enjoy the challenges involved with 3D design. With consumer product development at AAI, we are often tasked with merging traditional manufacturing geometries with organic marketing requests. SolidWorks is definitely our package of choice for this kind of work because it allows intuitive solid-surface hybrid modeling.” ― Steven Johnson

AAI Sponsors and Attends WOMengineers Day 2015

The University of Tennessee, located in Knoxville, recently held WOMengineers Day at the Knoxville Convention Center on April 11th, 2015.

This mini-conference was a rare opportunity for both male and female University of Tennessee engineering candidates to attend a full scale professional conference focused on topics both will need in identifying, and ultimately establishing, a successful career. WOMengineers Day highlighted successful women in the industry and included speakers, discussion panels, and breakout sessions to provide each student with those professional and personal skills needed which can never be taught within even the best curriculums. Eric Zeanah, our president and board chair of The University of Tennessee College of Engineering, was a keynote speaker and one of the event’s main supporters. Check out the other speakers at

Sheryl Sandberg, author of Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead, has aggressively pursued an initiative to increase the number of women in the field of engineering and computer science. The thought is to generate peer support for women who do choose this field, so that the chance of them sticking with it is greater. In response, Lean In Circles are popping up all over college campuses, and such Circles became the inspiration for UT’s WOMengineers Day. AAI played an integral role in the planning of this event and fully supports this cause, as our team consists of many female engineers.

AAI Visits CES 2015

CES David 4

AAI just attended the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas to see all the new and upcoming technology trends.  When we present to clients, we want to stay on the cutting edge and design ideas that their consumers will be excited about.  That’s why we brought our best manufacturing partners and visited hundreds of booths to gain insight on the future of the technology industry.  Some of the most notable trends we saw were the internet of things (IoT), wearable technology, 4K TVs, and drone technology!

Engineering Lab Expansion Underway!

AAI recently began expanding our offsite technical design facilities, adding a 3D printer and new equipment. The rapid prototyping lab and workshop allow sample production with material and quality representative of final products. Our state-of-the-art inspection equipment allows for in-depth evaluation of existing and developing products from both a physical and electrical perspective. These tools combined will aid in the development and refinement of products ranging from simple plastics to consumer electronics. We are expecting the construction to be completed by the end of the spring, so stay tuned for pictures!
